Headache or Migraine?
It is a common belief that a migraine is an extremely bad form of headache. This is partially true.
The International Headache Society considers a headache to actually be a migraine when:
The pain is described by 2 of the following:
- one sided
- moderate to severe
- throbbing
- aggravated by movement
And at least 1 of these symptoms are present:
- nausea
- vomiting
- photophobia (sensitivity to light)
- phonophobia (sensitivity to noise)
The IHS also specify that the headache lasts for 4 hours to 3 days (untreated, or unsuccessfully treated), but it's generally easier to think of a migraine as an intense headache with one of the symptoms listed above (from nausea to phonophobia).
